There are several professionals who can help, each offering a different perspective and expertise.
Specialist Teacher Assessor
A Specialist Teacher Assessor's training and experience covers a wide range of learning differences. An assessment with a Specialist Teacher Assessor helps families make sense of what’s going on, especially when there may be more than one thing contributing, and they are able to advise when another professional (e.g. OT, optometrist, etc.) may be helpful.
As highly qualified and experienced teachers, they assess skills like handwriting, spelling, planning, working memory, visual processing, and motor coordination. Most of the psychometric tests used by specialist teacher assessors are the same as those used by Educational Psychologists, ensuring a robust, evidence-based assessment. Furthermore, with direct classroom experience, guidance is realistic and practical for both home and school.
Educational Psychologist (EP)
Educational Psychologists take a broader developmental view, considering learning alongside cognitive, emotional, and social factors. They are particularly helpful when difficulties involve behaviour, attention, or wellbeing. EPs also provide guidance for schools and families and may contribute to statutory processes such as EHCP applications.
Clinical Psychologist, Paediatrician or Psychiatrist
If there are concerns about ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental conditions, clinical pathways are appropriate. These professionals make formal diagnoses and can advise on treatment or management where needed.
Optometrists, Occupational Therapists & Other Allied Professionals
Visual strain, sensory needs, or motor coordination challenges can also impact learning. Optometrists, ophthalmologists, and occupational therapists can clarify whether these areas are contributing to difficulties.
Where to begin
For many families, a Specialist Teacher Assessment is a practical first step. It provides clarity about strengths and challenges, screens for multiple learning differences, and identifies whether onward referral to other professionals would be beneficial.
